About this event

St Paul logo

OK, stick with me folks, this is a long but helpful invitation to a unique driving event!!!

Please join us on Sunday, August 9 for a touring drive through the National Scenic Byways in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Lakes, parks, beautiful homes, and historic sites are all in store for you on this ride. Watch for the 3 turtle crossings around the lakes.

The start: This tour will start at the parking lot for Lunds & Byerlys in Golden Valley, SW of the intersection of Hwy 100 and Duluth Street. A Google Maps location link is below. Our Driver's Meeting will be at 9:15am, and the first group will be departing at 9:30am. Coffee and restrooms are at the L&B. Gas is available at Speedway about 1/2 mile to the west on Duluth Street.

The Drive: This is a unique touring drive through beautiful areas of the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Speeds for all driving groups will be in the 20-30 MPH range throughout the drive. We can expect possible congestion at a few arterial crossings as well as OTMs (vehicles Other Than Miatas) to be engaged with our tour groups. Estimated driving time is 2 hours. There will be a brief restroom stop at Minnehaha Park. A GPS file will be available a few days before the ride via the GPS Routes tab on the club website.

We will proceed east to Wirth Parkway and then south to link up with The Chain of Lakes Scenic Byway starting at Brownie Lake, passing Cedar Lake to Bde Maka Ska (formerly Calhoun) Lake. Leaving Bde Maka Ska, we tour around Lakewood Cemetery on Kings Highway to Lake Harriet. The Lake Harriet drive will wind past the Bandshell and arrive at East Minnehaha Parkway.  We will follow Minnehaha Parkway to Minnehaha Falls Park, where we link up with West River Road.  Winding toward Lake Street, we cross over the Mississippi River into St. Paul onto East River Road. Making our way downriver to Summit Avenue, we will follow it past historical residences, (including the Guv!) and the St Paul Cathedral.  We turn onto Kellogg Boulevard through Downtown to the Wabasha Bridge to cross the Mississippi again. We proceed to Water Street and start our river drive adventure through Lilydale and up to Highway 13 to Mendota and our lunch destination. If you haven't been through these areas, you owe it to yourself to see some of the inner cities' beauty.

The Lunch: Lunch is at Lucky’s 13 Pub in Mendota, and we will be ordering off their menu. Note that a gratuity of 20% will automatically added to each check as the staff is working extra hard to accommodate our large group. To help us get an accurate count for the restaurant, when registering for the event please mark the appropriate question button if you are *not* planning to stay for lunch.

Registration:  Registration is required to participate. There is no fee to register, just pay your lunch bill. Registration will close on August 4. This event is currently limited to a low capacity because we are short of volunteer driving group leaders. If the event capacity has been filled, please complete the registration process to be put onto the waitlist. If you are interested in supporting this event as a driving group leader, please contact Bill Bretzke for more information. (See the contact info for Bill and many of your club friends in the Member Directory under the Member Info section of the club website!)

We look forward to having you join us for this tour of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul!
